MARGAO: Agitated residents of Canaguinim joined employees of ONGC to protest against the discrimination and injustice meted out to local residents in terms of employment in the Corporation office in the village.
They assembled near the main gate of the ONCG complex at Canaguinim on Monday morning and demanded justice for the local youth. What sparked off protest against the ONGC was the reported move by the Corporation to deny a lady a job, who has been working in the institute since the last five years.
The protestors dispersed after ONGC Group General Manager Ganeshan assured them to look into the issue. He maintained that recruitment of staff is done at the head office and the local unit has no role to play in the staff recruitment.
Local Sarpanch Krishna Desai told the media that the local residents would resort to hunger strike if the ONGC fail to employ locals in the ONGC office at Cananguinim. The Sarpanch maintained that the villagers will not sit quite and watch injustice meted to the local youth by the ONGC officials.
The residents maintained that they will not buy the argument that the head office looks after the recruitment, demanding that the ONGC officials take cognizance of the demands of local residents for employment.
Quepem MLA Babu Kavelkar held discussions with the ONGC GGM and demanded justice for the local residents. ‘The ONGC management should not create a situation wherein the locals are forced to resort to an agitation to demand justice. We only hope that better sense prevails and the ONGC officials do not precipitate the situation,” Kavlekar added.
