Stocks from Maharashtra yet to reach city’s wholesale market

BELGAUM: While the new seasonal onions from Maharashtra are yet to reach Belgaum wholesale market, prices of onion that were lower last Saturday are once again showing an upward trend.
The fact was evident despite arrival of about 90 truckloads of onion to the wholesale market here on Wednesday. Compared to last week, the onion prices on Wednesday increased by about Rs 1,000 per quintal.
According to wholesale traders in the Agriculture Produce Market Committee market yard, since onion from Nasik, Lasalgaon and other places in Maharashtra will reach Belgaum market only after a month, prices of onion will be on the high.
“Prices of onion in Belgaum market are now being ascertained by onion farmers from Bijapur, Lokapur, Bagalkot and other places in north Karnataka. Though we have received excellent quality of onions today, the price is comparatively higher and the trend is expected to continue till Maharashtra onion reaches Belgaum market after a month’s time,” a leading onion trader told Herald.
The wholesale prices of onion in Belgaum market on Saturday had reached to Rs 49 per kilo. Prices of smaller size of onion remained between Rs 15 and Rs 30 a kilo.
