CALANGUTE: An illegal online Indian Premier League (IPL) betting racket was busted at Candolim on Sunday night at 11.20 pm. Nine persons from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, have been arrested.
Calangute police said they conducted a raid after receiving specific and reliable information about an IPL betting racket being operated at F1 Villa, Crescent Villas, Anawado, Candolim. The complaint was filed by Narish Vaigankar. During the raid nine accused persons were caught red-handed while accepting online bets using a laptop, pertaining to the ongoing T-20 IPL cricket match played between Kings XI Punjab and Gujarat Titans.
Calangute police said the nine were found cheating the public by impersonating themselves as a legal organisation to accept online betting,
The nine accused are Tilokkumar M Chethani, aged 41, Rocky Karamchand Taleja, aged 35,, Pavankumar Mulidhar Manglani, aged 45, Kishan Sushil Lalvani, aged 24, Goplani Bharat Kumar, aged 38, Dinesh Bhatiya, aged 47, Naresh Gelwani, Chauthani Rinkukumar, aged 30, and Ramchandani Manish Chandarlal, aged 37, all residents of Ahmedabad, Gujarat. All the accused persons have been arrested.
One laptop and 17 mobile phones all worth approximately Rs 4 lakh have been attached under the panchanama. An offence under sections 3 & 4 of GDDPG Act, section 66-D of IT Act and section 420 of IPC has been registered. Further investigation of the case is in progress.
