VASCO: The onset of monsoon triggered a major landslide on the Verna-Cortalim highway in the wee hours of Saturday raising questions on the safety of motorists particularly ahead of opening of the new Zuari Bridge.
The landslide blocked a major portion of the highway stretch disrupting vehicular traffic and causing minor accidents.
On getting the information, Cortalim MLA Anton Vas visited the site and asked the bridge contractor Dilip Buildcon Ltd to immediately clear the debris and to take measures to stop recurrence of landslide. Vaz also contacted the PWD and Highway officials at the site so as to clear the highway.
Vas, who was supervising the works, said that he has warned the bridge contractor that he would not allow them to leave the site till they clear the entire highway stretch and also remove the mud that has choked the drainages.
He said when he reached the site early morning he noticed mud on the road and a couple of two-wheeler riders had skidded besides disrupting the movement of traffic.
The Cortalim MLA expressed his dissatisfaction over the ongoing works by the DBL and pointed out that a service road built had collapsed and caused landslide.
He demanded that the DBL and the PWD should look into all such issues and get them resolved to ensure safety of motorists.
He said that he will not leave the site till the mud was cleared.
Vas has requested the PWD engineers to take adequate measures to prevent recurrence of landslides during monsoon.
“The arrival of monsoon caused landslide and therefore we have to be prepared to prevent such incidents when it rains incessantly,” he said adding that the PWD and DBL should ensure safety of the people.
