MARGAO: The controversy of the Carnival route parade has refused to die down and it has snowballed into political slugfest amongst the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) councillors and among other local leaders.

While the group of 12 opposition councillors filed a complaint against the MMC chairperson as soon as the High Court had passed its verdict against the holding of the parade on the old route in Margao, they have also sped up the process of filing a disqualification petition against the MMC Chairperson Pooja Naik. There are also plans afloat to pull her down from the chair.

Commenting on the recent events, Shadow Council convenor Savio Coutinho said, “The Carnival Celebration should not be treated as an event to score political one-upmanship.”

Sources suggest that the councillors may challenge the submissions of the chairperson, which played a factor in the decision of the court not to allow the Carnival parade to be held in Margao, which was later held in Fatorda.
