Oppn demands action plan for job crisis in Goa

Points to the discrepancy between substantial funds allocated for job fairs and the dismal number of youth actually securing employment

MARGAO:  Criticising the BJP-led State government’s handling of unemployment in Goa, Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao called upon Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to devise a comprehensive action plan for the ‘Har Ghar Graduate’ crisis.

Alemao’s remarks come in response to Sawant’s recent acknowledgment of the pressing issue of unemployed graduates in the State.

Highlighting the failure of the government to generate employment opportunities, Alemao emphasised the urgent need for concrete measures to address the plight of educated youth who remain jobless due to the lack of initiatives by the ruling party. He lambasted the BJP government for its inability to curb the escalating unemployment rate in Goa, citing reports from NITI Aayog and CMIE that underscored the severity of the situation.

Alemao also criticised the government’s ineffective utilisation of resources, pointing to the discrepancy between the substantial funds allocated for job fairs and the dismal number of youths actually securing employment. He revealed that out of approximately 22,000 unemployed individuals who registered at a mega job fair, only a mere 500 were offered temporary or contractual positions.

Alemao stressed the importance of incentivising higher education and vocational training to empower students with the necessary skills for the job market.

Additionally, he urged the CM to address the decline in the ranking of Goa University and to implement the recommendations outlined in the “Goa Vision 2035 Document” prepared by the Golden Jubilee Committee. The Cuncolim MLA emphasised that adopting these measures would be instrumental in tackling the unemployment crisis and fostering economic growth in the State.
