Oppn Flags Drunken Driving Deaths; CM Stresses Law Adherence

A stark increase in fatalities attributed to drunken driving incidents has come under the spotlight as the Opposition highlights this pressing issue in Goa. The tragic Banastarim accident serves as a poignant example, where a speeding Mercedes collided with oncoming traffic, claiming three lives and leaving a trail of destruction on the approach road to the Banastarim Bridge.

The incident unfolded on a Sunday evening, as the Mercedes, hurtling towards Panjim, collided with two two-wheelers and three cars heading towards Ponda. The aftermath underscores concerns about maintaining law and order in the region.

Responding to these concerns, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant acknowledged the urgency of the matter. He stated that while the existing legal framework isn’t flawed, expecting law enforcement to individually inspect every vehicle is impractical. Chief Minister Sawant stressed the pivotal role of citizens in adhering rigorously to existing laws. Furthermore, he unveiled plans to enact more stringent legislation to address the growing issue.

This development captures the gravity of the situation, bringing the Banastarim tragedy and the broader issue of drunk driving to the forefront of public discourse in Goa.
