PANJIM: Leader of Opposition Pratapsing Rane demanded that the government should immediately act against the informal settlements (squatting) which have gone on to be a big problem for the State in the form of slums.
While participating in a discussion on demands for grants he alleged that migrant settlers pressurize MLAs to get their work done.
“Migrants come, scout and get voters cards…they pressurize the MLAs,” he said recalling how one migrant voter in Valpoi constituency asked him for a piece of land.
“We have to now act swiftly so that illegal occupying of land doesn’t take place,” Rane said while discussing demands for Municipal Administration and Craftsmen Training.
The senior Congress leaders expressed apprehensions over the mushrooming slums across various parts of Goa including the capital city ~Panjim. “Slums have become a big problem. People come here as construction workers, port or dock workers and settle here…Vasco, Mormugao, Mapusa, Panjim, Chimbel have migrants putting up a house whereas for common man, finding land is difficult,” he claimed demanding the government to take action.
Rane further commented that urban areas are being converted into dirty places with the mushrooming slums. “Goa is a tourist place. This should not happen. The entire development plan is going hay-wire,” he said further.
