MARGAO: Leader of Opposition, Yuri Alemao, criticised the BJP-led government over the delay in approving applications for the Goa Welfare Pension Scheme for Seafarers. Reacting to the demand made by the Goa Seafarers Association of India to fast-track pending applications, Alemao slammed the government for its ‘insensitivity’.
Alemao highlighted the challenges faced by Goan youths who, due to a lack of employment opportunities, choose to work abroad, contribute to the Goan economy by earning foreign exchange, but still have their citizenship snatched from them, and face challenges, including the delay in pension approvals.
Alemao questioned the government’s approach, pointing out that retired seafarers are struggling for their pensions. He called on Chief Minister PramodSawant to explain why the government is causing such hardships for Goans who have contributed significantly to the State.
The Opposition leader criticised the government spending crores of rupees on events without expediting financial approvals to disburse pensions in a timely manner. He demanded that the government instruct relevant officials to expedite the scrutiny of pending applications.
“I am unable to understand why the BJP Government is reluctant to make the Goa Welfare Pension Scheme for Seafarers permanent. We must respect our hardworking seafarers who stay away from their homes to earn foreign exchange and support their families and their homeland,” he said.
“This government has become blind with its obsession for lavish events, and spending money by emptying the State treasury. They have lost the sensitivity to bring smiles on the faces of Goans during the festival season,” he remarked.
