Oppn MLAs rush to the well; House adjourned

Allege discrimination in admitting and allowing calling attention notices

PORVORIM: Goa Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar on Monday adjourned the House after the Opposition members rushed to the well of the House alleging discrimination in admitting and allowing calling attention notices. The trouble started soon after Zero Hour when the Speaker asked Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar to move his calling attention notice.

Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao demanded to know the status of the calling attention notice tabled by him. “I had given a notice to table a calling attention on ‘tendencies of delinquent and criminal behaviour in police force in Goa’. I also wanted to make a Zero Hour mention on safety and health concerns of children studying in Vidya Prabodhini School, Porvorim due to the garbage site and incomplete structure of school. But both were not listed on the day’s agenda,” Yuri said.

The Opposition Leader pointed out that in the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting, it was agreed that both, the Ruling and Opposition members will be allowed to make mention of equal number of Zero Hour

matters and to table one calling attention notice every day. But that was not happening and on Monday, both calling attention notices of the ruling party were listed, he said, alleging discriminatory treatment to the Opposition.

The Speaker assured Yuri that now on, he would ensure that both the benches would be given equal opportunity to table one calling attention notice, but Yuri said this assurance was given before too.

As uproar was on, the Speaker asked the Mormugao MLA to move his calling attention notice. Amonkar tried to read his calling attention notice, but nothing could be heard in the House. Soon all seven Opposition members rushed to the well of the House forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House till 2.30 pm.
