Oppn slams govt for convening BAC on Monday

PANJIM: Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat on Thursday slammed the BJP government for convening the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) on May 3 when Goa is moving towards health emergency with rising number of cases and deaths due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Reacting to the notice issued by the Goa Legislature Department convening a BAC meeting at the Speaker’s Conference Hall at Goa Assembly Complex, Porvorim, at 4 pm on Monday, May 3, Kamat asked, “How come government all of a sudden finds a need for convening a BAC meeting when the House is adjourned till July 19? I received a notice today (Thursday) which does not have any agenda mentioned on the same.”

Kamat said that the only business the BJP government under Chief Minister Pramod Sawant needs to take up now is of providing free and timely healthcare to the patients. All other business can be taken up later.

The government needs to inform all the MLAs what is the intention behind calling for a Business Advisory Committee meeting now, when the Legislative Assembly Session will resume almost after two and half months.

“We all need to know the intention of the government before attending the meeting,” he said.

“In the past, the government never listened to the valuable and constructive suggestions of the Opposition MLAs. Attempts were made to make us the party to the decisions which we had either opposed or given conditional approvals. Unfortunately, the BJP government backtracked on the assurances given to us in BAC meeting and went ahead with its own agenda while finalising business of the session,” Kamat said.

The Leader of Opposition demanded that the Goa Legislature Secretariat must send them the agenda with all the points to be taken up in the BAC meeting well in advance and give them enough time to discuss with other Opposition MLAs so that they can make their stand clear in the meeting.
