Opportunity for State to get MWDT award modified: CM

PANJIM: Welcoming the Centre’s move to extend the tenure of Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said the Centre has given the State an opportunity to get the Tribunal Award modified.

“This is a welcome move for Goa as the Central government extends the period of Mhadei Disputes Tribunal for submission of further reports till August 19, 2020 in view of the pending applications filed by the government of Goa against Karnataka, including the application for disobedience of the order of the tribunal,” he said.

He said that the extension has given the State an opportunity to get the earlier award of the Tribunal modified considering Goa’s prayers in the applications. “Till the final order is passed, Karnataka will not be able to take action against the interest of Goa,” he stated.

The development came a day after the Supreme Court allowed the Centre to notify the MWDT award given in August 2018.

However, the three States have made further references to the case in the Tribunal and hence the MWDT asked for extension of tenure to pass final order.
