PANJIM: Congress party on Tuesday stating that the delimitation and reservation process for the coming Municipal elections doesn’t follow proper criteria reiterated its demand that the State Election Commission (SEC) be empowered to undertake process for local bodies.
Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat in a press meet said that the recent amendment introduced to the Goa Municipalities Act, where the word population has been substituted by voters, which is complete “ultra virus”.
“There is absolutely no logic and no criteria followed in the reservation and delimitation process undertaken for the Municipal polls. It is done only to accommodate their (BJP) people,” Kamat said.
“We demand that the reservation and delimitation process be handed over to the SEC, which is become a defunct body with government taking all decisions,” he added.
Kamat said that many councilors from Margao, Mormugao, Quepem, Sanguem are likely to challenge the notification in the high court, shortly. The government has clarified that the reservations are done as per the law and without political interference.
