Opposition has no objection to 2-day session: BAC meet

PANJIM: The Opposition benches appeared to have accepted a two-day session of the State Legislative Assembly as they did not raise any objection during the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting held on Tuesday.

The meeting chaired by Speaker Rajesh Patnekar was attended by Legislative Affairs Minister Mauvin Godinho, Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat, GFP MLA Vijai Sardesai, MGP MLA Ramakrishna Dhavalikar and NCP MLA Churchill Alemao.

Godinho told media persons that the meeting was fruitful and everyone was on the same pitch. “No one had any objection on having a two-day session. Everyone is thinking of the forthcoming elections and its preparations, even though the polls are yet to be declared,” he said.

The two-day Assembly session is scheduled on October 18 and 19. This is going to be the last session of the current term, with elections due in February 2022.

Later, Kamat said the two-day session is merely a formality. “There is nothing in the business… it’s going to be a normal session with no time to discuss and raise any issues,” he said.

Sardesai said there was no point in opposing the session since the decision had already been taken. “We wanted a lengthy session but once government decides, we cannot object nor do anything. BAC just decides on the business,” he said.

Sardesai said the opposition raised issues with regards to the Goa Bhumiputra Adhikarini Bill, to which Speaker said the Bill had not been sent to the Governor for assent.

The Legislature Department has received 77 starred and 221 unstarred questions for the upcoming session.  Patnekar said till now, there are three government bills for introduction and passing.
