PANJIM: Amidst simmering rumours, Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat on Friday indirectly ruled out any move to join the ruling BJP.
In a response to a tweet on whether he is joining BJP, Kamat replied that he is member of Indian National Congress as well as the Leader of the Legislative Wing and Opposition of Goa. However, the reply was not categorical with “Yes” or “No”, thus raising further speculations.
“I am member of @INCIndia. I am Congress Legislative Party leader and I am also the Leader of Opposition of Goa. My focus and priority is to lead a constructive opposition on issues concerning the Common Man,” former Chief Minister tweeted.
Kamat had in the past said that “media often comes out with news of him joining BJP”. He had even said that his Delhi visits are always linked to meetings with BJP high command.
The rumours were rift after Congress President Girish Chodankar claimed that Kamat has been offered Chief Minister’s post by the BJP. “Local and Central BJP leaders feel that Kamat has the capacity to resolve the issues concerning the State. Many BJP leaders are after Kamat. They are urging him to join BJP and become CM,” he had said.
Kamat had, in 1994, quit Congress and joined BJP when he was denied the INC ticket. In 2005, he left the BJP-led government in the State and returned to the Congress, where he continues to be.
