Opposition raises concern over potholes, pathetic road conditions

PANJIM: The Opposition legislators sought relief from the government over l the poor road conditions  and potholes that Goans are witnessing this monsoon season.

Speaking during the Motion of Thanks to Governor’s Address on day-one of the monsoon session of the Legislative Assembly, the Opposition benches pointed out the inconvenience to commuters owing to pathetic road conditions with one of its MLAs taking a dig at Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s assurance to Goa about doing away with potholes by November 1, 2021.

“People are asking me not to step out since CM had announced making Goa pothole free by November 1, 2021. But, which pothole,” Congress MLA Alton D’Costa said in a sarcastic remark while moving an amendment to the motion.

He pointed to various road stretches dotted with potholes, a claim which was supported by other Opposition MLAs.

Congress’ Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar cited various accidents owing to bad roads while slamming the government for neglecting the issue. “Today we see accidents because of the bad road conditions. The government should provide some relief, especially to the two wheeler riders,” he added.

St Cruz MLA Rudolf Fernandes  recalled a recent fatal accident at Chimbel junction wherein a trucker crushed a senior citizen to death. He told the House that from 2014 till date, the same accident prone zone has witnessed 20 fatal accidents while reminding the government to complete the flyover.

“Former local MLA Victoria Fernandes had moved a file for the bridge, and the construction is half done. We want it complete along with the service road,” he demanded. Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira questioned the wisdom of the government for allowing digging of the roads, which are recently tarred.
