Porvorim: Leader of the Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar on Thursday urged the State government to write to Centre to de-notify the new Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Rules 2019, as its implementation would be detrimental for the coastal State like Goa.
During zero hour mention, Kavlekar raised the issue of CRZ Rules 2019, according to which the no development zone (NDZ) is reduced to 50 meters from the sea and 20 meters from rivers, creeks, etc.
“Despite opposition from local fishing communities, NGOs, political parties, the State government went ahead and granted its consent to the new rules, which will destroy the identity of beaches, marine life, ecology, environment, eco sensitive areas, etc,” he said.
Kavlekar questioned government intention behind granting its consent to the draft rules, despite severe opposition. “Whom is government trying to please? Government has protected the interest of building lobbies while completely ignoring the interest of public,” he charged.
The Congress leader demanded that government should immediately write to Centre demanding withdrawal of the notification highlighting its ramifications.
