PANJIM: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa observatory has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall activities for Goa, with the State being put on orange alert for July 11-12.
In its weather bulletin, IMD has forecast the possibility of an increase in rainfall activity over Goa from July 10 as a low pressure area is likely to form over westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh –South Odisha coast around July 11.
“The increased rainfall activity is likely to continue for about a week from July 11. Heavy rainfall exceeding 64.5mm to 115.5mm of rainfall in 24-hours to very heavy rainfall exceeding above 115.6 mm is very likely with isolated and scattered distribution,” IMD said.
IMD has said that areas vulnerable to landslides, flooding be kept under monitoring and necessary precautions be taken.
The southwest monsoon has weakened over the Goa coast for the last two weeks. The seasonal rainfall has been below normal so far. As on date, the State has received 41.92 inches of rains, which is 9 per cent below normal rainfall which is 46.30 inches.
The month of June had ended with six per cent surplus rains. However, compared to the last year, the month recorded much lower rainfall. The month had recorded over 37 inches of rainfall in 2020.
