PANJIM: Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat urged the South Goa Collector to issue orders for cremation of all unclaimed bodies lying in the mortuary and said he would bear the cost of the cremation.

In a letter to the South Goa Collector, Kamat said as many as 18 to 290 unclaimed bodies some of which are COVID infected were lying in the mortuary as the government had not made any arrangements for their disposal.

Kamat said he was shocked to know that these bodies could not be disposed since the government had failed to make payments to the Margao Municipal Council for their disposal.

Kamat further said last year he had personally monitored the arrangements at the Margao crematorium for cremation of COVID infected bodies. The local institution Mathgramastha Hindu Sabha which manages the crematorium had extended full cooperation for the same and was continuing to do so till date.

Stating that the government needs to be sensitive with the current situation and act wisely, Kamat urged the Collector to immediately issue orders for disposal of all the unclaimed bodies lying in the mortuary.

“I will personally make all necessary arrangements including payment of charges for their respectful cremation,” he said.
