Ore-laden trucks cause noise and sound pollution in Sanvordem, say locals

No solution to issue even after debating it at gram sabha; regular spillage of coal by the roadside continues to create nuisance; panchayat and traffic police prefer to see no evil, lament villagers

QUEPEM: Residents of Sanvordem have taken strong exception to the heavy trucks plying through their village overladen with coal thereby causing noise and dust pollution besides also endangering the locals.

They complained that most of these trucks carrying coal have 10 or 12 tyres and since they are overloaded there is regular spillage of coal on the roadside.

Even though this matter was raised at the Sanvordem Gram Sabha, no solution has been worked out as yet as the people demanded that only normal trucks with six tyres be permitted to ply through their village.

Local resident Swapnil Bhandari lamented that though this matter was raised at the last two gram sabhas, nobody has till now come out with a solution. “I have even given a written complaint to the panchayat but to no avail,” he said.

He said the people are getting “terrorised” with the sight of such heavy vehicles with 12 tyres and fear for their safety.

Besides the covering on the trucks transporting coal is done haphazardly because of which coal spilled on the roadside is visible everywhere.

Swapnil said even the police have ignored his complaints and disclosed that he had submitted a complaint to the Curchorem Traffic Cell of Goa Police.

Another local Gautam Bhandari while asserting that they are not opposing coal transportation per se, said they are concerned about their safety as these heavy trucks do look frightening.

Besides, he said these trucks are driven at high speed and very often in a rash and negligent manner because of which danger of fatal accident always looms large.
