MARGAO: The villagers of Orlim resolved to fight to save River Sal at the Gram Sabha meeting after a detailed discussion on how the river is getting contaminated by discharge of sewage not just from various establishments but also the Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) near the river.

The Gram Sabha that was chaired by Sarpanch Simon Pereira also resolved to oppose the double tracking project in Goa that they fear will convert the State into a coal hub. Health issues faced by locals of Vasco and surrounding areas due to coal transportation were also discussed. Opposition to the double-tracking project and any proposal to convert Goa into a coal hub was also raised while pointing out to the ill-effects of coal on the residents, including children, of Vasco.The GS also passed a resolution opposing the diversion of River Mhadei.
The main discussion was on River Sal where the members deliberated upon how the River can be cleaned scientifically and rejuvenated.
It was even suggested that a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) can be filed and how the views of the other panchayats concerned can also be made a part of this petition.
Stopping construction on the banks of the river was also suggested as a solution to the problem and the the government to ensure that all establishments are connected to the sewerage network.
