MARGAO: Opposing a proposal made by the Town and Country Planning (TCP) Board, which the locals believe is aimed at allowing mega projects in villages, a decision was taken at the Carmona Gram Sabha (GS) to convene a special gram sabha on May 14, to discuss and deliberate on legal solutions to fight this proposal.

The Carmona GS members were referring to a proposal made at the 183rd TCP Board meeting, wherein permissions can be granted to mega projects if there is a ten metre-road proposed on the Regional Plan 2021 (RP2021). Locals pointed out that there is no 10-meter road, and permissions can only be granted if the government completes the acquisition to expand the width of existing roads from six metres to 10 metres, which has not been done.
The locals who had publicly opposed the Raheja mega project, feel the TCP has come up with this proposal to provide a backdoor entry to such real estate projects that have not been able to get permissions due to the existing rules and small road width. The villagers also opposed the proposal to charge each household Rs 75 for garbage collection as the government has not yet provided the panchayat funds of Rs seven lakh under the garbage management scheme.
