MARGAO: The occupants of Osia Commercial Arcade in Margao that houses various government offices, business offices, restaurants, showrooms, Inox Multiplex, ATM counters etc have filed complaints with the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson and South Goa District Collector, asking the civic body to take immediate action to address the severe flooding and subsequent dangers posed by MMC’s negligence in executing pre-monsoon cleaning and maintenance of public drains adjacent to the building.
They lamented that their numerous attempts in the past to get the attention of MMC or its Disaster Management Cell proved futile.
“Due to MMC’s failure to cover the drains with concrete slabs and ensure regular cleaning, the drains have become choked with mud, shrubs, waste, and debris, exacerbating the flooding issue. The water has overflowed and receded inside our building, making it hazardous for both entering and exiting the premises,” read the memorandum signed by the occupants.
They further pointed out that due to the numerous private and government offices, the building is frequented by thousands of people, including the elderly and young on a daily basis and that the livelihoods and businesses and the safety of countless individuals are at stake.
“The safety and well-being of our staff and customers are at risk due to the stagnant water, which prevents drainage and poses a threat to life and property. The drains must be thoroughly cleaned and appropriate measures should be implemented to prevent future blockages,” they added.
