MARGAO: People of Salcete and especially the social activists are known for their fearless initiatives to lead agitations in the interest of Goa. However, when it comes to the elections, hardly few are seen showing interest in the same, as now only five prominent social activists of Salcete out of 56 candidates from eight different constituencies are noticed trying their luck in the current assembly elections from their respective constituencies.
Amongst the five prominent social activist turned candidates include noted Dr Jorson Fernandes, Antonio Alvares, Michael Ferns, Digvijit Chavan, and Seoula Vas, who has recently been very active in social activities.
Dr Jorson, hailing from Cuncolim was witnessed raising his voice against the damage to the social fabric of society, besides issues related to the environment. Now, he is contesting the Assembly elections from Cuncolim constituency on a Trinamool Congress (TMC) ticket.
Antonio Alvares, being in social activism for the last several years, is always among the frontrunners in raising voice against the issues related to the public at large.
At the moment Alvares, contesting the elections at Navelim as an Independent candidate, has taken up the issue pertaining to the pollution in Salpem Lake at Navelim, besides western bypass passing through Navelim. He is already fighting the case in the High Court with regard to the same issues.
Activisits Michael Ferns (Fatorda) and Digvijit Chavan (Navelim) are contesting as independent candidates.
Seoula Vas who had evolved as one of the voices for the issues of common people is contesting from Fatorda constituency against the mighty Vijai Sardesai of Goa Forward Party and Damu Naik of BJP.
