Vasco: The fishermen from Vasco have yet again reminded the Mormugao Municipal Council, they will not allow any work related to the Vasco Fish Market project to be undertaken if they are not taken into confidence. The issue has raised its head after the Chairperson of MMC Kritesh Gaonkar said the work of the new market had been approved and would soon begin.
The Chairman of MMC Kritesh Gaonkar said the proposal of both the fish markets has been handed to the Goa Urban Development Authority (GSUDA) and the tendering of the Vasco fish market has already been done. “The file of the Vasco Fish Marker has been sent for financial approval. Secondly the plan of Baina Fish market has been discussed with the GSUDA and has been internally approved to be put to the meeting and finalised” said Kritesh.
When asked about the issue raised by the Fishermen regarding the Vasco fish market he said “We have done this plan only after discussion with the fishermen and if they have any other issues we will consider them too” said Kritesh.
A fisher woman from Vasco fish market told that they had been called by the Local MLA Carlos Almeida and had sought the wishes of the fishermen. “We had told him that we need a new market but, in a way, that we want. We won’t allow the construction of the market until we are taken into the discussion” said the fisher woman.
The Councillor from the ruling group Pascoal Fernandes has also insisted that the stakeholders here have to be first taken into confidence before any furtherance of the plans.
Yet another classic case of the Mormugao politics has come to light this time over development. It will be interesting to see whether the plans of the Chairperson to lay foundation for the overly delayed Vasco Fish market are executed or not.
