Over 100 BPL household toilets vanish in Loliem-Polem

CANACONA: In a shocking revelation, it has come to light that over hundred toilets built by PWD (Water Supply) in 2012 for Below Poverty Line (BPL) households have disappeared in Loliem-Polem Panchayat.
Locals have alleged that the department has connived with the officials of PWD (Water Supply) to siphon off the money by showing bogus names on paper without constructing toilets for them.
This startling fact came to light last week when officials from Loliem-Polem Panchayat went to geo-tag the toilets. However, the PWD (Water Supply) officials, who accompanied the survey team, were not able to show on ground over 100 toilets built in 2012, sources said.
However, they could locate only 80 of the 250 toilets shown as built during that period.
The situation in rest six panchayats in Canacona taluka is similar to Loliem-Polem, informed a source close to the taluka level survey team.
Concerned locals claim that this is not just a small scam but public money to the tune of over Rs 3 crore has been siphoned off by the contractor.
The corrupt officers should be held accountable and that amount with interest should be recovered from them, the locals demanded.
Puzzled over the survey findings, the Canacona Block Development Office has intimated the Director of Panchayats in writing, informed BDO sources.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Panchayat has supplied 54 mobile bio-toilets which will be installed at different wards of Canacona taluka till proper toilets are constructed, sources said.
