MARGAO: Over 200 workers, who have served the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) for more than five years, will be regularised very soon. However, at the same time, these workers have expressed fear that the process may lapse, as the MMC is yet to submit the list of employees to the Directorate of Municipal Administration for regularisation.

The DMA had asked the MMC to submit the list of workers to be regularised by August 31 but the municipality has sought for more time, and the requests has been accepted.
It may be recalled that there are instances in the past that the failure of the civic body to expedite the procedure had disheartened several workers who had served the municipality for over five years.
Sources said recently the DMA had issued a letter to the municipality to submit the list of workers to be regularised by August 31.
Over 200 workers expect their services will be regularised very soon. However, they are very upset after learning that the civic body has not submitted the list to the DMA at the given time.
“We have learnt that MMC has not yet submitted the list of workers to the DMA, and it looks like once again the deserving workers will miss the bus,” said a worker, who has served the civic body for over five years.
He urged the concerned officials of the civic body to expedite the process and submit the list before it lapses, and deliver justice to the workers.
Speaking to Herald, MMC chief officer Agnelo Fernandes admitted that they missed the date to submit the list of workers whose services were to be regularised.
“August 31 was the last date given to municipality to submit the list of workers but we have asked for more time and DMA has accepted our request,” he said.
He said the process was held up due to no proper records and details of the workers.
“There are many workers whose date of joining is yet to be confirmed; besides few workers have not submitted details of their date of birth and etc. The municipality has asked the concerned workers to provide the details at the earliest,” he said.
It may be recalled that in 2020, nearly 14 Margao Municipal daily wage workers had filed the written petition in the High Court challenging the order of the Additional Director of Urban Development, directing the MMC to keep their regularisation order in abeyance.
Earlier, in 2006 around the services of 39 workers were regularised. Now, workers are hoping that such situation is not repeated and their service is regularised.
