Over 300 people evacuated from Camurlim

Continuous heavy downpour led to the rise in Chapora River water levels which flooded the houses; Residents shifted to two temples

CAMURLIM: Over 300 people from Camurlim were evacuated as their houses got flooded following torrential rains. 
The continuous heavy downpour led to the rise in Chapora River water levels which led to flooding of the houses in the vicinity.
The locals were shifted to two temples between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
Camurlim sarpanch Vishant Naik Gaonkar said around 300 people were evacuated from across three wards in Camurlim and are currently provide shelter at the temples.
“On Wednesday between 11 pm and 4 am, the water started entering the village, flooding several houses.  We began with the rescue operations and started ferrying people in canoes. The water level at some places was above three feet. Three wards in Camurlim were severely affected due to their close proximity to the Chapora River. Now, the water has started to recede. Former MLA of Tivim has helped us during this time,” Gaonkar informed.  
On Thursday evening, Bardez Mamlatdar visited the spot along with Navy boats to reach out to people who were stranded.
Fifteen people were rescued by the Navy using boats. However, the 300-odd people were evacuated by the locals with the help of the mamlatdar and collector. It is learnt that the Camurlim panchayat is providing the evacuated people with meals since Thursday morning. The panchayat would continue to do so till the situation is brought under control.
Former MLA of Tivim, Kiran Kandolkar was present at the spot on Wednesday night to take stock of the situation.
