PANJIM: More than 45,000 students from Classes V and VI have applied for tablet pcs which are likely to be distributed by the government in June.
Speaking to Herald, Deputy Director of Education Anil Powar said, “According to the announcement made by the chief minister in the assembly, the tablets will be distributed to the students around June,” Powar said.
After assuming the reigns of government last year chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, in his budget speech had promised to deliver tablet computers to students of Classes V and VI besides also formulating an e-learning module for the students.
The tablets are to be delivered at unbelievable prices of Rs 25 per student and Rs 10 per student from the reserved community.
Meanwhile, Powar also reiterated that the education department has imposed a ban on the transfer of students who have passed the Class IX from one school to another to complete Class X in a bid to counter some ‘elite schools’ who pass students at Class IX by taking an assurance that they will leave the school and complete their matriculation in another school.
“Yes it is true that transfer of a child has been disallowed. We received reports that some schools especially ‘elite ones’ are passing students in Class IX on the condition that they leave the school on passing. This is in order to stop that,” Powar told Herald.
The directorate of education has already sent out a circular to that effect making sure that no school can admit students in the Class X except on grounds when a child’s parents are transferred, in which case they will have to take special permission.
Some schools in order to maintain an impeccable passing percentage at Class X examinations are inclined to pass weak students of Class IX on condition that they would leave the school and seek admission elsewhere.
These students would often end up in government schools and in most cases do not take further interest in studies.
