Overcrowding at Calangute forces cops to shut stores

MAPUSA: After the State Government gave partial relaxation on lockdown from Friday, vendors selling essential commodities on the coastal belt of Calangute opened their shops for the public. However, due to overcrowding by the public, the Calangute panchayat had to forcibly shut the shops in presence of local police.

Vendors dealing with essential commodities such as vegetables, milk, fruits and groceries had opened their shops on Friday morning and to maintain social distancing, Calangute panchayat had demarcated lines outside these shops. However since people were not following the social distancing norms, the panchayat had to shut all the shops in Calangute and instructed people to return back to their homes.

Meanwhile after shutting down, it has been decided that essential commodities will be home delivered.

“All the shops selling essential commodities in Calangute are shut as the public rushed to buy commodities when the shops were open on Friday morning.  People crowded the area and failed to follow the social distancing norms even after the panchayat made the necessary demarcation outside the shops. Now the panchayat has decided to home deliver the essential commodities with the help of volunteers. People need not need to move out of their houses to buy essential commodities,” said Calangute MLA and Minister Michael Lobo.
