PONDA: Alert citizens including a doctor on Monday played an altogether different role of manning traffic near old RTO office at Ponda for an hour following snapping of overhead electricity wires by a container truck.
The incident took place at around 11.30 am when suddenly the overhead electricity wires near Old RTO office got snapped in the middle of the road when container truck brushed against them.
However, some locals including a doctor who were passing by noticed the wires in the middle of the road and observing that it could pose danger to the lives of motorists and pedestrians, took initiative and began stopping the traffic.
The alert citizens namely Kundan Kerkar, Jayakant Namshikar and Mulla Murtuza Ibrahim called the Electricity Department at Curti, but most of personnel were on urgent duty and far away from the spot. This caused delay of an hour leading to long queues of vehicles on both sides.
However, these alert citizens spared their precious time with a few traffic police and managed to control and stop the traffic on NH till electricity personnel arrived at the spot and disconnected the power lines.
According to Mutuza Mulla, a local of Shapur, the NH widening and underpass work is progressing at the spot. Recently, the contractor while cutting a tree at the spot, the same fell on the overhead wires and as a result the electricity poles got bent.
