PANJIM: Pop singer and Padmashree Remo Fernandes has been chosen as Goa’s electoral icon to motivate the voters, for the Goa assembly elections, scheduled for March 3.

Announcing this at a press conference, Joint chief electoral officer Narayan Navti said that the basic idea behind appointing a state electoral icon is to promote ethical voting in the state.

Navti explained that the messages of the icon to the voters, specially the youth, would inspire them to vote in the ensuing assembly polls. “We have already displayed various hoardings of Remo with a message to vote, along the state’s routes,” Navti informed.

He said that through the icon, CEO would create awareness about ethical voting and at the same time would urge people to come out in large numbers to vote.

“Remo is a music icon for several youth in the state. His messages would encourage them to vote in large numbers,” joint CEO opined.

Navti said that Remo was selected by Election Commission of India (ECI) after they were satisfied that the person does not have any political inclinations.

Along with Remo, names of two more personalities were also forwarded to EC by CEO.

Former President APJ Abdul Kalam has been appointed as national election icon while Indian Cricket team Captain M S Dhoni has been selected as icon for Jharkhand.
