Paes emphasises on education & sports

Happy with Velim voters’ response

CHINCHINIM: Former tennis player and now Goa Trinamool Congress (TMC) member Leander Paes said education has to be subsidised, so that youth can afford sports education whilst talking to the media on Friday.

The first athlete to pick up an individual Olympic medal for the country, Paes acknowledged that he received a good response from people during his two-day tour to constituency. Paes is originally from Assolna, which calls in Velim.

“Most of the sporting heroes like Joaquim Carvalho the footballer, his father a hockey player, me a tennis player come from Tollecanto Assolna. Goa is rich in culture, music, theatre, drama, sports and football. It’s a duty to use sports to keep youth away from gadgets, computer screens and keep them in good mental health,” said Paes who won many world doubles titles with Mahesh Bhupathi and Martini Hingis.

“Sports education can bring youth jobs in government, private and corporate sectors too. There are nearly 1.5 million people in Goa compared to other States with job ratio of 1:4,” said Paes.

Paes said that not only tennis academy there should be other sports academies too in Goa.

Paes requested youth to work hard and with better education do good for the country and shine internationally too.

Those, who accompanied Paes and spoke to the voters included, TMC’s Swati Kerkar who said TMC is a ray of hope for Goans who are fed up with the BJP and Congress.

Anthony Clovis said that their TMC group moved to different villages in the Velim constituency and explained the people the Major Port Act does not require permission for repairs if their houses do not come within 50 metres from the bank of rivers.
