The National Institute of Oceanography’s (NIO) study on sediment cores will get a boost with the institute recently setting up Paleomagnetic Laboratory at its premises.
The institute is one amongst the 38 constituent laboratories of Council for Science and Industrial Research (CSIR).
“This laboratory facility is expected to be used frequently for detailed magnetic measurements of the sediment cores for understanding depositional environment and autogenic mineralisation,” NIO’s website mentions.
The researchers say that the recent addition will be used to analyse data pertaining to magnetic stratigraphy and environmental magnetism.
The website says that the researchers use the magnetic data together with geochemistry and sedimentology data for meaningful geological interpretation.
“The magnetic measurements are rapid and are of non-destructive in nature and can be carried out with smallest sample preparation,” the website added.
