Pall of gloom descends on Mangueshi

Mangeshkar family members say Didi will always live in their memories through her songs

PONDA: A pall of gloom descended on the village of Mangueshi following the sad news of the passing away of legendary singer and “Nightingale of India” Lata Mangeshkar on Sunday.

Saddened by the news of the singing maestro’s death, the Mangeshkar family members comprising Prasanna, Sanjiv, Puja, Chanda and Pranav said, “Didi will always live in our memories through her songs. We are proud that Didi made Mangueshi world famous with her melodious songs.

The family members said “Ae mere watan ke logon…” is their favourite song besides all devotional songs including “Mage Ubha Manguesh, Pude Uba Manguesh” and all other Hindi and Marathi film songs of Lata Didi.

Recalling the memories, the family and villagers said they heard about Dinanath Mangeshkar, who was an artiste, had left Mangueshi with his four young daughters and son for Mumbai for better prospects where they could showcase their hidden talent. However, Lata Didi, they said, would visit her deity at Lord Manguesh Temple during her sojourn in Goa.

Following the news of the singing maestro’s death a national news channel arrived in Mangueshi and started enquiring about Lataji’s ancestral house.

Tourists visiting the Manguesh Temple too got emotional on receiving the sad news of legendary singer’s demise. 

Adv Varad Mardolkar, Veling Priol Cuncoliem panch and Youth Congress president said, “It’s a great loss. The villagers feel proud that Lata Didi was from our village. I am proud that Didi made Mangueshi world famous with her melodious songs. Who says Didi is gone, she will live forever in us through her melodious voice.”

The vendors selling flowers near Manguesh Temple said, “The tourists visiting the temple throughout the year would always ask where is Didi’s house in Mangueshi and we would direct them saying it is near the temple. Today, the tourists visiting the Manguesh Temple got emotional following the sad news of the passing away of Lata Didi.”
