Palye sarpanch booked for threatening reporter

PERNEM: Palye Sarpanch Babani Laxman Arolkar has been booked on charges of threatening a local reporter, who had highlighted the issue of illegal sand excavation and cutting of mangroves in the area.

In his complaint, Vilas Arolkar of Keri-Pernem told Pernem police that he had highlighted the cutting of mangroves at Kiranpani River by some sand extractors. Acting on the report, authorities initiated action in the matter.
“At about 11 am on January 14, the accused, Babani Arolkar, called me on my mobile and requested to come to Kiranpani to report some news. On reaching Kiranpani, Babani Arolkar came with more than ten people and confronted me,” stated Vilas Arolkar.
“They abused me and restrained me for nearly one hour, while threatening me with dire consequences if I were to write about sand extraction activities in future,” he added.
Acting on the complaint, Pernem police has booked an offence against Babani Arolkar and is investigation the case.
