PANJIM: Fisheries Minister Vinod Palyekar on Thursday said that he has decided launch a fishermen dialogue to interact with traditional fishermen and understand their problems.
Speaking to Herald, Palyekar said, “I will meet the traditional fishermen by visiting their villages across Goa to know their issues. There are many problems faced by the traditional fishermen and we will identify those by interacting with them and come out with a solution.”
He added that he will direct his department officials to chalk out a tour programme and identify the villages where maximum fishermen are based and will start the tour in a month’s time once the blue print of the same is ready.
“All these years, the traditional fishermen were deprived of their rights. There are only a few fishermen left now and the government is committed to protect their interests,” Palyekar said.
He also that the Fisheries Department has decided to review the schemes for the welfare of fishermen and to provide much-needed support. “My department will now review all the schemes and beneficiaries of last ten years,” he added.
