Panchayat by-polls peaceful

The by-election for the two seats in two panchayats in Ponda taluka passed off peacefully without any untoward incident.
Voting in Ward No 2 in Tiverem-Orgao Panchayat recorded 81.60 per cent, while in Ward No 3 in Veling-Priol-Cuncolim Panchayat, the voting was 59 per cent.
It may be recalled that Gokuldas Naik of Ward No 2 from Tiverem-Orgao Panchayat had resigned after he was elected to North Goa Zilla Panchayat from Tiverem seat, while Shivdas Gaude of Ward No 3 from Veling-Priol-Cuncolim Panchayat got elected from Veling ZP seat.
In Tiverem-Orgao Panchayat, out of 462, 372 votes were polled (59%), while in Veling-Priol-Cuncolim, 463 votes were polled out of the 780.
In Tiverem-Orgao, three candidates in the fray are Jayesh Naik, Suresh Naik and Uvraj Naik. In Veling-Priol, there are four in the fray. They are Chedo Vasant Gaude, Dasu Narayan Gaude, Mangaldas Gaude and M Khedekar. Counting will be held on Monday at 8 am.
OLD GOA CORRESPONDENT ADDS: The bye-election to Ward No 1 in St Estevam Panchayat passed off peacefully.
The seat had fallen vacant after former panch Seema Rohidas Narvekar was disqualified by the High Court in regard to the violation of Panchayat Raj Act three months ago.
Election to Ward No 1, which has been reserved for OBC women, was held at the Government Primary School at Akhada-St Estevam polling booth.
The Ward No 1 is having a straight fight between Manisha Shushant Volvoikar and Sanjeeta Santosh Tari.
According to reports, by afternoon, about 30 per cent voting was recorded at the lone booth in Akhada-St Estevam.
There are 557 voters, out of which 275 are female and 282 male.
