PERNEM: The Virnoda Village Panchayat has strongly objected the setting up of swab collection centre for COVID in the Government College of Arts and Commerce, Virnoda.

While addressing the media Sarpanch Prashant Rao requested the government to set up the centre in an isolated place instead of having it in the college building which is located in a populated area.

He informed that first the authorities failed to take into consideration the local panchayat before taking the decision of setting up the swab centre at Virnoda college and then when the panchayat wrote to the Deputy Collector, Mamlatdar Pernem and Health Officer Tuem Community Health Centre objecting to this decision, the authorities failed to respond to the letter.

The sarpanch said, “Sant Soyrobanath Ambiye College of Arts and Commerce is located in the heart of the village and a residential area having population of senior citizens who are prone to get infected to this virus easily. Also a high school is located just opposite the college having 200 students and having swab collection centre at such a spot is not safe for the people.”

Rao further informed that there is a movement of teaching and non teaching staff in the college for admission purpose and also the students will be answering exams in the same building next month. Taking swab for COVID testing at the college premise will put fear in the minds of the parents and they will not send their children to the college.
