CUNCOLIM: In the recent elections for the Cuncolim Union Club, a panel led by former Superintendent of Police Sammy Tavares secured a clean sweep of the seats. The election took place on October 29.
The contest for the position of club president saw Cuncolim councillor Vishal Dessai triumph over the outgoing president, Suraj Ambe, by a significant margin. The direct battle between these two candidates concluded in favour of Vishal Dessai.
Out of the ten members elected to the executive committee, nine belonged to Sammy Tavares’ panel, with Nilesh Kunde being the sole representative from the opposing camp. The nine committee members from Tavares’ panel are Dinesh Naik, Savio Gomes, Ashok Phadte, Sian Fernandes, Prahlad Desai, Oscar Martins, Raymond D’Souza, Leo Morais, and Pandit Desai.
Sammy Tavares threw his support behind the winning panel, while the former club president, Prakash Dessai, supported the losing side. Given the organisation’s status as the oldest club in the city, the election results garnered significant attention, with vigorous campaigning, including door-to-door canvassing.
The elections were overseen by Election Officers Dinkar Desai, Vicky Tavares, and Orlando Fernandes.
