PANJIM: Goa government has formulated a confidential review committee to analyse the causes and suggest measures to curb maternal deaths. As per the 2021 records of the government, State’s maternal mortality rate was 123 deaths per lakh live births.
A 15-member committee, headed by the chief medical officer in charge of the family welfare section of the health services, is been constituted to review anonymised case sheets and other relevant documents and records to identify preventable causes of maternal deaths.
“It will analyse causes of maternal deaths and the associated factors and suggest interventions and measures to address them,” the notification stated.
The committee has to monitor and ensure recommended actions including amendments to the policies and frame new guidelines as per requirement.
The committee comprises of medical professionals, associated with State run hospitals and several private practitioners. The committee will meet quarterly or as and when required.
The maternal mortality rate in 2020 was 49 deaths per lakh live births which increased to 123 in 2021, the majority in the rural areas.
