PANJIM, SEPT 13
After the police successfully laid hands on Michael Luis Fernandes — the interstate kingpin of various crimes, last week – Panjim police has moved Judicial Magistrate First Class at Panjim seeking a transfer warrant to take him in their custody.
“We have moved Panjim JMFC requesting to direct Mapusa JMFC to hand over Michael’s custody to Panjim police. He is required for two chain snatching cases, impersonation and cheating cases booked against him at Panjim police station,” said DySP Deu Benaulikar.
The alleged accused is also wanted in other cases including dacoity, vehicle thefts and robbery, registered against him at Old Goa and Agassaim police stations.
After splitting from a gang operating at Karnataka and Gujarat, the history-sheeter had formed another gang with Raju Devar’s assistance in sub-jail Sada. Michael was caught hiding in a hut at Colva, in a massive police raid on Friday.
His gang accomplices Raju (35) of Margao, Yan John (39) of Nagaland and a minor were arrested in a combing operation by the North Goa police team at Siolim market on Thursday. The police have so far recovered a pistol, Maruti Zen car and three motorcycles from them.
Fernandes has apparently confessed killing a woman in Karnataka and looting another woman of gold ornaments in Gujarat.
According to police, while Raju provided manpower and resources, Michael planned operations and the notorious gang hitherto has burgled lakhs of rupees. The gang usually targeted domestic and foreign tourists in Goa.
