Part of Porvorim’s NH17 in darkness
The construction of the third Mandovi bridge seems to have become a kind of worry for the road commuters on National Highway 17.
Due to the construction, the street lights on the NH17 from Mandovi bridges to the Majestic Hotel have been uninstalled leaving the entire stretch into darkness, posing threat to commuters.
Speaking to Herald, commuters have said that there should be some mechanism for illumination as it looks extremely dangerous at night, especially for women.
“We travel daily from this road at night but now since the bridge work has progressed there is pitch darkness and this could become a happy hunting ground for anti-social elements,” said Jayesh Naik, resident of Porvorim.
Another commuter Sneha Salgaoncar says, she travels late due to her night duties but now she feels scared to do so.
“I now call my parents or brother to pick me up due to this problem,” she said.
The third Mandovi bridge, being constructed at a cost of Rs 515 cr, has already missed its April 2017 deadline and in all probability would also miss the next of December 2017.
“Till the bridge is completed the authorities need to make alternate arrangement,” said Denzil D’Souza of Soccorro.
