PANJIM: Rain played havoc in Panjim city as its perennial problems of waterlogging in low lying areas and roads continued.
The city’s arterial roads especially 18th June road was inundated causing diversion of traffic and water entering shops, establishments and hotels along the perimeter of the road. Water also entered houses in low lying areas of Mala, Panjim which has been prone to flooding over the years.
A total of 26.6 mm (3.8 inches) of rainfall was received in the last 24 hours, taking the total rainfall to over 32 inches (818 mm) during the current monsoon season. Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy showers for the State in next 48-hours, with warnings issued to more residents of Cuncolim to be ready for evacuation.
The heavy rains, lashed the State after a brief dry spell on Monday, bringing misery given the lackadaisical attitude of government and local bodies in completing works with almost all the low-lying areas of the city and various towns and villages getting inundated. Heavy traffic jams were reported at almost every junction in the city and towns. Fire Services received only two calls of tree falling on road at Bambolim and at Raj Bhavan.
Almost all parts of the city received heavy rainfall in equal proportions throughout the day. The locals were seen complaining about the various road works, which were kept incomplete resulting into water logging.
The road stretch from Miramar to Dona Paula, the interior roads at Taleigao, Shankarwadi, Caranzalem are dug and work has been left incomplete causing severe hardship to the commuters.
