Pao price hike ‘rift’ widens

AGBCA threatens to sell pao at Rs 2.50 in protest, if the group of bakers from Salcete fails to implement the decision to sell pao at Rs 5

MARGAO:  The rift between the bakers in the State has widened with the All Goa Bakers and Confectioners’ Association (AGBCA) on Thursday threatening to sell pao at Rs 2.50 in protest, if the group of bakers from Salcete fails to implement the decision to sell pao at Rs 5.

It may be recalled that a division between the bakers from Salcete over the pricing of pao came to the fore as some implemented the decision to hike the price of pao to Rs 5 while the others reverted to the earlier price of Rs 4 which left consumers confused.

Speaking to Herald, AGBCA president Peter Fernandes demanded that a section of bakers from Salcete implemented the decision to sell pao at Rs 5 which was agreed by all at the initial stage.

“My association has intimated the message to the group of bakers from Salcete who have reverted back to the old price of Rs 4. We must unitedly fight for justice to protect the traditional business. All bakers need to follow one decision by leaving aside differences,” he said.

Peter said he has given them a day’s deadline (October 8) to revert back to the new rate.

“Bakers under my association will gather near the Margao municipal building, where most of them are noticed selling pao. We will sell pao at Rs 2.50 in protest, if they fail to implement the decision to sell pao at Rs 5”, he warned.

Upset over the non-implementation of price hike by some bakers, the association is holding meetings with bakers across Goa for implementing the new rate.
