PANJIM: As school re-opens next week, the Legal Metrology Department has warned parents and students about being cheated while purchasing stationery and rainwear and to look for manufacturing and quality details on labels.

The department has urged the general public to purchase stationery only after ensuring that mandatory declarations on each packed commodity has been followed. “In the rush, people usually overlook name and addresses of manufacturers, manufacturing dates, quantity and other details. At times, the size of a book cover roll (inside the pack) is not what is mentioned…These are minor things but mean a lot,” Controller Vishwas R Naik told a press conference Wednesday.

The same, he said also implies while buying raincoats. Naik said the department has stumbled upon such methods used by traders to dupe customers in the past.

Naik explained that packaging labels on raincoats which contains quantity, price, manufacturing date and other details; cannot be revised by the traders.

“The labels are permanent markings. Many such goods have been seized but the traders are habituated to sell old goods with revised prices,” he said adding that people should be cautious and ensure that they are not cheated.

Naik also informed that all Chinese goods should always be sold with an Indian declaration.

To a question, Naik said the assistant controllers keep a tab on the retail outlets for diesel and petrol.
