PANJIM: Developmental paediatrician Dr Nandita D’Souza asked special educators to work together with parents of special children and elaborated on the role of parents of special children and special educators in working together in the best interests of the child.
She was speaking at a session for special educators on the topic “Parents and special educators – the jumbo partnership” organised by the Special Educators Association of Goa (SPEDAG).
She stated that expertise of family and teachers differ, there is lack of time on the part of parents so they skip meetings and the interaction between the special educators and parents are often focused on problems of the child rather than the solutions. She urged teachers to start with the strengths of the child like what he/she enjoys doing the most, remain calm and handle situations with maturity and not argue with parents and listen to what they have to say rather than asking too many questions.
D’Souza,  stated that parents are the first teachers in the lives of the child and to help the children the teachers have to partner with the parents by building rapport.
