PANJIM: On the eve of the appointed day for school reopening, markets witnessed a heavy rush with parents and students on a frantic shopping spree buying stationery, rain wear and other items ahead of the new academic year.

Lakhs of students will join schools as the new academic year 2013-14 begins on Wednesday after a long summer vacation. But, uncertainty still prevails over many aspects of the calendar including whether the education department will be enforcing 225 instructional days for schools.

The education department is yet to take a decision on the new school schedule and the schools are uncertain and wary that the government could at the last minute notify a new school calendar, forcing them to make last minute changes.
