PONDA: The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Ponda, on Tuesday remanded the Banastarim accident accused Shripad alias Paresh Sawardekar in 14-day judicial custody. He was later taken to Colvale jail.
Meanwhile, the anticipatory bail application filled by Meghana Sawardekar, owner of the Mercedes SUV, will be heard on Wednesday, August 16 by the Sessions Court at Ponda. On August 9, the Sessions Court, Ponda had granted interim relief to her and posted the matter for hearing on August 16.
Earlier on Monday, the JMFC had extended the police custody of Paresh by a day after he was produced by the Mardol Police, for further remand.
It is alleged that the accused was under influence of alcohol and drove the Mercedes SUV in a rash and negligent manner which led to the horrific accident at Banastarim that snuffed out three innocent lives and left three others injured on August 6.
Paresh, who was arrested at midnight after the accident, was remanded in two days police custody. Later the JMFC extended the same by another five days and on Monday by a day even as the accused has applied for bail before the High Court of Bombay at Goa.
The incident has caused widespread shock and concern in the community, highlighting the importance of responsible and sober driving. As the legal proceedings unfold, the affected families and the community at large await justice for the tragic loss of lives and the injuries caused to the victims by the horrific accident.
