MARGAO: In a shocking incident that took place below the flyover bridge at Kharebandh, Margao, a truck carrying cement blocks fell sideways on a parked car. Luckily, there were no injuries reported.
Earlier, the truck was parked by the roadside but on the pavers that cover the roadside nullah. These pavers, which were laid decades ago, caved in due to the weight of the truck and the back tyres of the truck fell in. The front part of the truck fell sideways onto the white car, which was parked next to it. This car, a Maruti Suzuki WagonR bearing a Rajasthan number plate was badly damaged.
Locals pointed out that not only do the old pavers need to be replaced, but there could also be another incident elsewhere as the same pavers are on a further stretch of this road. Surendra Kalangutkar, a local resident said that there are no parking signs put up on the road but yet heavy tracks park on these pavers and that there is a chance of another accident in the near future. Savio Coutinho, Margao Municipal Council (MMC) former chairperson said, “Barricades should be put up at the edge of the pavers to ensure that such mishaps do not occur given that a huge nullah lies underneath, which the public may not be aware of.”
He also called for accountability on this issue given that there could have been a loss of life in this incident that occurred on Tuesday.
